Individual Therapy

Focus Forward assists clients with a multitude of goals and presenting stressors. Some presenting problems may include but are not limited to burnout, relationship stress, boundary setting, low motivation, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, sexual dysfunction, and life transitions. Through our work, individuals can expect to gain insight and awareness of the patterns and constraints that may be keeping them stuck. This awareness can be gained through exploring one's value system, family of origin, relationship history, and relationship to the presenting problem.

I have experience working with clients ages 4 to 76 with many ethnic, religious, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, and gender backgrounds. I have extended experience working with clients who struggle to set boundaries with work, friends, and family and who struggle to maintain a life balance between work, hobbies, social life, and their health goals & expectations. I enjoy working with individuals as they navigate their life transitions, whether that may be a recent move to the city, a breakup, a new job, a baby on the way, or an identity transition between roles or generations. I also enjoy working with individuals navigating relationship- stuckness, fears, and expectations. I enjoy empowering clients to identify goals, set boundaries, and take control of aspects of their lives in a world that can be unpredictable and uncertain.

Many relationships seek counseling to align with each other's goals, increase connection, address infidelity or parenting stress, increase intimacy, navigate financial stress and build communication skills. Focus Forward hopes to increase the relationship’s awareness of patterns of behavior that may be contributing to at least one person feeling disconnected, misunderstood, or unseen.

Focus Forward works hard to keep the system balanced by making partners feel like the therapist is not taking sides; the alliance is towards the relatioship, not one member of the system. The goal in our therapy is to help clients better understand the dynamics within the relationship and bring these patterns/dynamics to their attention so they can be shifted. Relationship work is about shared goals, shared responsibility, and accountability; all partners have behaviors and actions that they can fine-tune.

Whether you are about to move in with each other, get married, or have a baby, it never hurts to have an unbiased third party that can help you develop the tools you and your partner(s) need to manage some chaos or stress. Relationship work can be preventative! You go to the doctor for a routine check-up, why does therapy need to be any different? It is nice to have a third party you trust, so when a crisis does hit, a therapist already knows the ins and outs of your relationship history, your strengths, and the tools you have to fall back on.

I have experience working with partners with different cultural backgrounds and LGBTQUIA+ and poly/kink relationships. Whether you are looking to strengthen your relationship, improve your sex life, navigate a recent crisis, or better understand your and your partner's needs and expectations, Focus Forward is here to help guide you.

Life Coaching

What is the difference between Life Coaching and Therapy?

I like to think about Coaching as “Life Maintenance.” Coaching tends to be shorter-term work designed for individuals who want to make a change in their lifestyle to reach their maximum potential. These clients might be feeling stuck, unsure of how to make changes, or in need of additional motivation that can help hold them accountable. Psychotherapy treats mental illness and often explores the past to understand the present stressors, mindset, reduce symptomology, and achieve goals. Coaching does not treat, cure, or prevent any mental illness and tends to be focused more on the present and future. Both coaching and psychotherapy are client-centered, goal-orientated, and grounded in empirical-based interventions.

Coaching with a licensed psychotherapist is beneficial. The intensive training, research, and face-to-face experience needed to become a licensed practitioner allow these particular life coaches to pull from empirically based wellness tools and models to help clients lift constraints to change and make decisions and choices that are aligned with their values and goals. Understanding systems theory and motivation will aid in creating a long-lasting, sustainable change while being cognisant of mental health.
